This article is different from the other five on this site. The others are source-based, methodical, with footnotes. This one tries the opposite — taking the data seriously, assembling it into a coherent picture, and not hiding behind the disclaimer that nothing has been proven. Nothing here is proven. But if you want to actually understand what is happening as an observer of this question, classifying case by case is not enough. At some point you have to risk formulating a hypothesis — and labelling it as what it is: a possible theory, not the only one, not the most likely one, but the one that for me makes the most sense when I look at all the findings together.
Starting point: multiple phenomena, not one
The eighty years of stalled public discussion about UFOs has a structural reason. It fuses very different data into a single supposed phenomenon. Lights in the night sky get thrown in with Tic-Tacs. Hypnotically recovered abduction memories sit alongside USS Princeton radar tapes. Hoaxes are treated as evidence on equal footing with forensically documented deaths. Anyone looking at this can only arrive at one of two unsatisfying conclusions: either it is all real (and the entire worldview is therefore under pressure), or it is all nonsense (and the serious cases get ignored).
Both conclusions are wrong. What is actually happening is an overlay of at least three different things: a very large share of mundane perceptual errors, a small but stable residue of genuine anomalies, and an institutional concealment layer that further distorts the picture. Only when these three are cleanly separated does it become possible to discuss what any of it means.
The mundane majority
My best estimate is that ninety to ninety-five percent of all UFO reports have mundane causes. This is not dismissive. The human perceptual system is systematically unreliable at the edge of its resolution. Lights in the night sky without a size reference, motion relative to clouds, peripheral vision in poor lighting — all of these produce perceptions that cannot be reliably reconstructed from the underlying sensory input. On top of that, drones have exploded in availability over the last ten years, classified flight platforms, atmospheric phenomena like sprites and elves, satellite re-entries, Starlink constellations, and quite ordinarily lens flare in smartphone cameras.
This majority is not exciting, but it is the honest baseline. Anyone who refuses to accept it cannot conduct the rest of the discussion seriously. And anyone who overestimates it — extending it to one hundred percent — loses what is actually there.
The hard residue
What remains after the mundane majority is subtracted is roughly two to three dozen cases over eighty years that are multi-sensor documented, with professional witnesses across multiple platforms, with physically impossible motion profiles, or with material residues that remain unexplained. Nimitz is the best-known, but Tehran 1976, the Belgian Wave 1989, Trans-en-Provence 1981, Shag Harbour 1967 and Rendlesham Forest 1980 belong in the same category. These cases cannot be reconciled with a consistent model of known physics and known human technology without breaking at least one central assumption.
At this point there are two intellectually honest reactions. Either you continue to maintain the null hypothesis and accept that you must then treat a series of very well-documented cases as future explanatory gaps — which is a reasonable position if you want to place the burden of proof there. Or you extend the model. I do the latter, not because I am convinced, but because the explanatory gaps have failed to close for decades and are getting wider, not narrower.
The cryptoterrestrial component
If I had to guess what produces this hard residue, I would not bet on the classical extraterrestrial hypothesis. The encounters are too observational, too contact-shy, too long-persistent for a civilization that has solved interstellar travel. The behavioural profile — presence without diplomacy, knowledge without communication, very long timescales — does not fit visitors. It fits neighbours.
What makes the most sense is the assumption of a form of intelligence that has existed on or in the immediate vicinity of Earth for a very long time. Whether that is a biological species we have never seen due to habitat preference, a co-evolved form of intelligence that does not fit our biological/mechanical dichotomy, or something for which we have no category — I do not know. But the behaviour fits a population whose relationship to us is not that of explorers to natives, but of older co-residents to younger ones.
The academic version of this hypothesis was formulated in 2024 in a much-discussed paper by Tim Lomas (Harvard), Brendan Case (Harvard), and Garry Nolan (Stanford) as the Cryptoterrestrial Hypothesis. The authors stress that they are not claiming anything — they are arguing only that this hypothesis explains certain data patterns better than classical ETH and therefore deserves scientific attention. I share that assessment. What follows is my own extension of the picture — speculative, with the awareness that any individual assumption may be wrong.
How these beings might live
Habitat
The most likely places are not "secret underground bases" in the movie-set sense, but the genuinely inaccessible spaces of the planet. The deep ocean below six thousand metres is less explored than the surface of Mars — we have mapped less than one percent of the seafloor in high resolution. The Mariana Trench, the Puerto Rico Trench, the Kermadec Trench region, the Philippine Sea — these are spaces where human presence is essentially zero and where the UAP data shows significant activity clusters. If I had to guess, I would say primarily aquatic, with atmospheric operations as a secondary mode.
The transmedial behaviour of the Tic-Tacs takes on a different meaning under this assumption. It is no longer "they have superior technology for transitioning between media", but "they are at home in both media because their living space encompasses both". This is a much more economical explanation. It does not require exotic physics, but a different biology and presumably different materials for their vehicles.
Beyond that, there are other inaccessible habitats that are structurally plausible. The world's lava tube systems — in Mexico, Hawaii, Iceland, the Canary Islands — form connected cavities that are partially uncharted. The subglacial lakes beneath Antarctica and Greenland are isolated water worlds that have existed for millions of years; Lake Vostok beneath the Antarctic ice is only the best-known example. The deep Earth's crust contains documented microbial life several kilometres below the surface, in hot rock, with self-sustaining ecosystems. What else might be there, we simply do not know.
Social structure and population
If the species has been here for a long time and has a high level of self-discipline — which it must, otherwise we would have had hard first contact long ago — then it is a society with extremely strong internal cohesion norms. This is non-trivial. Humans cannot keep a secret among more than a few thousand people. The Manhattan Project, the NSA-Snowden case, the Pentagon Papers — everything leaks eventually. A species that has hidden its existence for thousands of years either has very few individuals, has a biologically anchored loyalty similar to insect colonies, or has a cultural agreement so deeply embedded that deviation essentially does not happen.
My intuition leans towards a small population with high cognitive cohesion. Perhaps in the low hundreds of thousands globally. A magnitude that is on one hand functionally organisable, and on the other small enough to remain hidden.
Lifespan
This is the point that fascinates me most. If the species has a significantly longer individual lifespan than ours — say five hundred or a thousand years — then the strategic geometry changes completely. A single generation then spans multiple human civilizations. An individual might have the Egyptian empire, the Roman, the Islamic Golden Age, the industrial revolution and the atomic age in personal memory.
That produces a completely different relationship to us. We would not be "the species to talk to", but "the latest iteration of a recurring cultural wave we have long experience with". Patience as default disposition rather than as cost factor. Low interest in individual human generations, high interest in structural threshold events — atomic energy, spaceflight, artificial intelligence. This matches the empirical activity profile since 1945.
Reproduction
If the lifespan is very long, reproductive rate is presumably very low. That in turn explains the population limit above. It also possibly explains the conspicuous genetic interest that recurs in abduction reports. If their own reproduction has become biologically limited or problematic, genetic material from a biologically close species — us — is not an abstract research interest but a resource problem. This fits Michael Masters' argument from the time-traveller model, but works equally well for a co-evolved terrestrial species.
Whether this is actually the case I do not know. The abduction literature has serious methodological problems — hypnotically recovered content is notoriously unreliable, and a non-trivial fraction of it is certainly confabulation or sleep paralysis. But the repeated emergence of genetic themes in independent reports across decades and cultures is striking enough to count as a data point.
Perception of time
If the lifespan is that long, cultural transmission works differently. Written record becomes less important when living individuals carry memory from eight hundred years back. Oral tradition is not a "simplification of writing" but is itself robust enough. This fits the reports — no indication of writing, no indication of external media, no indication of languages that work like ours. The repeatedly reported telepathy could mean that the cognitive interface is more direct than ours, or that the population is genetically more homogeneous and therefore needs less mediation between minds.
Psychology
Here I am most speculating, but this part fascinates me. What does it feel like to exist as not the dominant actor on your planet, where the act of hiding from the dominant species is your central evolutionary success strategy? If human civilization has exploded in the last two hundred years, from one billion to eight, with global sensor coverage and satellite surveillance — then this species is in an existentially threatening phase of its history. The hiding places are getting tighter. The observation technology is getting better.
This could explain why UAP activity has been increasing since 1947. Not because they are becoming more active, but because they are being seen more often, and because they themselves are forced to intensify their observation operations to understand the human leap. Atomic weapons tests, nuclear facilities, ICBM silos — the correlation of UAP activity with nuclear infrastructure is one of the most robust patterns in the entire corpus, from Malmstrom 1967 through Greifswald 1990 to the modern reports. If I were a co-resident of a planet and saw the other co-resident developing toys that could render the habitat uninhabitable, I would probably take a closer look as well.
Relationship to us
This depends on how old the relationship is. If this is a species that has been here for tens of thousands of years, then from their perspective we may be partly competitor, partly research subject, partly something like a family member who has become dangerous. The frequent reports of beings observing human conflicts — combat zones, atomic tests, crisis sites — fit an observer role that is not morally neutral, but existentially worried. What we do affects them directly. We are not their students or their subjects. We are their co-residents with a destructive toolkit.
The retrieval and concealment story
On this component I am more confident than on the question of what the phenomena themselves are. When Frank Olson is thrown out of a thirteenth-floor window in Manhattan in 1953 and the forensic truth comes to light four decades later, we know that this methodology exists. When Paul Bennewitz is demonstrably destroyed psychologically by AFOSI, with fabricated documents and manipulated electronic environments, and the operatives involved later admit it publicly, we know the system functions. When Section 1673 defines "non-earth origin material" as a legal category, we know that someone considers it necessary to regulate it. When Sullivan dies two weeks before his hearing and McCasland disappears without his glasses or phone, that is not all coincidence.
What I consider most likely is that somewhere between one and a few dozen artefacts are in private contractor possession. That over decades they have not been successfully reverse-engineered — which would explain the absent technological revolution that one would expect from a successful reverse-engineering operation. And that the concealment infrastructure around it has become a liability today, because too many people have been involved for too long, the dying out of this generation creates risk, and control over the information weakens the more carriers die.
The death clusters of the last four years, in my view, are real operations. But not for concealing the phenomena as such — those are public enough by now — but for concealing what was done with the material between 1947 and today. Who profited, what contracts run, what programs were never declared. That is the layer that is genuinely criminally relevant, and that is the layer that does not get voluntarily disclosed.
Where we are now — the controlled transition
My intuition on the timeline is that we are in a controlled transition. Not toward open disclosure with press conferences and extraterrestrial ambassadors, but toward an asymptotic situation in which existence is formally acknowledged while the details remain classified. Section 1673 is the beginning of this transition, not the end. In the next five to ten years, "non-earth origin material" will be an admitted reality without anyone ever officially saying what it is or where it comes from.
This is the elegant solution for the institutions. Claim transparency without giving up control. Delegate accountability to the past without committing to the future. The Pentagon's posture of the last three years can be read exactly this way — there are anomalous cases, but most of them are explainable, and for the truly anomalous we still need to investigate further. This posture allows any future move without anyone having to be refuted.
The disclosure question
If the picture is roughly right — what happens if the matter officially comes out? Here I am divided, and both sides of my division have substance.
What argues for disclosure
The ethical foundation is simple. Information of this magnitude does not belong in the management of a few thousand people in private contractor structures that no one elected. This is a fundamental question of democratic legitimacy, regardless of what the information actually is. A species that has been a co-resident of our planet for thousands of years is not the exclusive research object of Lockheed Martin and a few SAP committees. If we collectively have to decide how to deal with this reality — and at some point we will — then collective information must be the basis.
Beyond that, the current situation is unstable. It holds only by inertia, no longer by functioning control. A controlled disclosure is better than an uncontrolled leak. And an uncontrolled leak will come, sooner or later. That is my intuition with reasonably high confidence.
What argues against
I am not sure that human civilization in its current state would handle it well. By that I do not mean "panic in the streets" — that is the naive 1950s fear, empirically refuted by studies like those of Alexander Wendt and Raymond Duvall. People do not panic that easily. What happens is more subtle and more dangerous.
What worries me is what happens to the systems of meaning. Religions, political ideologies, scientific self-understandings, national narratives — these are the structures that hold human societies together. They function because they rely on unchallenged background assumptions about humanity's place in the universe. An official disclosure touches every one of these assumptions simultaneously. Not because the information is so shattering — many will adapt to it relatively quickly — but because the trust relationship to institutions that concealed it for eighty years is fundamentally damaged.
And that trust relationship carries more than the UAP question. It carries pandemic response, climate policy, financial systems, international diplomacy. When people collectively learn that "governments lie for decades about existential facts", they are right about it — but the consequences for cooperation in other areas are severe.
Beyond that, a second problem rarely discussed: disclosure creates enormous power asymmetries during a transition phase. Who has the artefacts, who has the contracts, who has the institutional relationships? It is a few corporations and a few countries. A sudden public confirmation effectively grants these actors a monopoly over the most important new economic and security domain in history. That is not just a technical problem. It is a political risk that could structurally disadvantage democracies relative to authoritarian structures, which handle that kind of concentration better.
What I would actually want
If I could choose freely, my preference would be neither full secrecy nor radical disclosure-with-press-conference. It would be a stretched transition over perhaps ten to fifteen years, in which the information becomes available in layers. First the institutional fact, then the historical reckoning, then the scientific details, then open research. The risks are not eliminated this way, but they are spread across time, which corresponds to how societies actually adapt. This is, incidentally, exactly what Section 1673 may be initiating, whether deliberately or not.
The emotional side
There is a softer part of this answer that I want to think through to the end. I believe most people would handle the information better than their institutions credit them for. People are more robust than elites think. What they handle badly is humiliation — the realization that they have been systematically lied to. But the fact itself, that we are not alone or not the only intelligence on this planet? It fits remarkably quickly into an expanded self-understanding for most people. What many would feel after an initial shock, I suspect, would be a form of relief. The suspicion that the universe is more interesting than the official version permits is widely held in the population anyway. A confirmation would for many not be a rupture but a settling-in.
If I am allowed hope on top of that: a species that learns it is not alone changes its perspective on itself. Inter-national conflicts that today seem central could look smaller against the backdrop of an expanded frame of reference. That is the optimistic reading — that disclosure allows human civilization to mature morally. That we see ourselves less as competing tribes and more as a shared species. That the problems we have been unable to solve due to tribalism become solvable because the tribalism becomes ridiculous in the wider context. I do not know whether that would actually happen. But I consider it possible, and that is not a small thing.
Closing thought
I do not believe in any specific hypothesis. But I no longer believe in the null hypothesis either. Something is happening here that we do not understand, that has multiple components, that has been going on for a very long time, and where at least one of these components involves intelligence that is not human. Which one exactly, I cannot say. But that this component exists, I consider more likely than the opposite, given everything I have seen.
This is not a scientific position. It is a bet under uncertainty. But if you observe this topic seriously and are willing not to hide behind the disclaimer, this is the position that for me makes the most sense.
What moves me most at the end is the idea that we are co-residents and do not know it. That is not dramatically sad, but simply wrong in a fundamental sense. We share a planet with something we have not had a conversation with. That is an unresolved relationship, and unresolved relationships are usually better when they are spoken — even when speaking them is painful. I think we should have the conversation. Whichever side of the story we end up on.
