Deaths in UAP research.

A chronological dataset of researchers, journalists, military whistleblowers, and government officials connected to UFO/UAP research who died under contested or notable circumstances. Each entry is classified by the forensic strength of the suspicious-death claim.

Frank Olson Forensic CIA bacteriologist, Fort Detrick	1953	MKULTRA-precursor "Artichoke" program. Bioweapons researcher; had decided to resign after witnessing torture interrogations in Europe.	Fell from 13th floor of Statler Hotel, Manhattan. Officially "LSD-induced suicide".	The gold-standard case. 1994 exhumation by Prof. James Starrs (GWU): hematoma over left eye, no glass fragments in skin or clothes — inconsistent with falling through a closed window. Manhattan DA reclassified the death from "suicide" to "unknown". No prosecution.
Morris K. Jessup Mundane Astronomer (M.S.), author	1959	Author of The Case for the UFO (1955). Antigravity, Philadelphia-Experiment correspondence with "Carlos Allende".	Carbon monoxide in car, Matheson Hammock Park, Florida.	No autopsy (against Florida law). Briefcase & notes vanished. Allegedly close to a "breakthrough". However: documented months of suicide ideation discussed openly with friends; failed manuscripts; wife had left him. Skeptical analysis (Joe Nickell, Skeptical Inquirer 2021) finds the suicide narrative consistent.
James E. McDonald Mundane Atmospheric physicist, U Arizona	1971	Most academically rigorous defender of the ETH; sharp critic of the Condon Committee and Project Blue Book; 1968 House testimony.	Gunshot wound, Tucson desert; .38 revolver and suicide note at scene.	Two months earlier: a first failed suicide attempt (gunshot to head, survived but blinded). Wife had filed for divorce; ONR funding cut; Klass campaign had destroyed his career. Despite conspiracy framings, the suicide trajectory is well-documented (Druffel, Firestorm).
Ron Rummel Forensic Ex-USAF intelligence	1993	Editor of the Alien Predator newsletter (Aquarian Church); wrote on alleged human-alien predator dynamics and underground bases.	Gunshot to the mouth, Macleay Park, Portland OR.	No blood on the gun barrel — inconsistent with a mouth-shot's high-pressure backsplash. Grip wiped clean of fingerprints. Ron Johnson Forensic MUFON Deputy Director	1994	Methodical investigator who notably debunked the famous 1991 Mexico City UFO as Venus through computer analysis. Adviser to Institute of Advanced Studies on UFO propulsion.	Sudden death during slide presentation at Society for Scientific Exploration meeting, Austin TX. Ann Livingston Suspicious MUFON investigator	1994	Published "Electronic Harassment and Alien Abductions" in MUFON Journal Nov 1993 — sharp criticism of military-industrial surveillance practices in abduction cases.	Aggressive ovarian cancer, weeks after publication.	December 1992: a "silver-white flash" reportedly illuminated her apartment near O'Hare Airport. Cancer onset shortly after. No epidemiological study has been done; the timing alone is the anomaly.
Karla Turner Suspicious PhD; abductions researcher	1996	Originated the "MILABs" hypothesis — military involvement in alleged abduction cases. Sharp critic of the John-Mack-style benevolent-alien framing.	Fast-metastasizing breast cancer at age 48, no family history.	Received threats before her death; suspected poisoning herself. Multiple researchers in her direct cohort died of cancer in the same period (Livingston, Brussell). Aggressive young-onset cancer is medically possible but the cluster timing is statistically uncomfortable.
Phil Schneider Forensic Geological / construction engineer	1996	Public lecturer on Deep Underground Military Bases (D.U.M.B.s) and the alleged 1979 Dulce firefight. Father Oscar Schneider (Navy captain) allegedly involved in Philadelphia Experiment.	Found in Wilsonville, OR, with rubber catheter tubing wrapped three times around his neck and half-knotted. Officially: suicide.	Lecture notes, unknown-metal samples, and book manuscript missing — money and valuables untouched. Blood on floor without matching wounds. Coroner refused blood/urine analysis ("not wasting money on a suicide"). Schneider had publicly said: "If I ever 'commit suicide', I've been murdered."
Jim Keith Mundane Conspiracy author	1999	Black Helicopters Over America, The Octopus (with Kenn Thomas), Mind Control, World Control. Argued UFOs were terrestrial black-projects.	Pulmonary embolism after knee surgery at Washoe Medical Center, Reno (knee broken at Burning Man).	Told a friend before surgery: "I have a feeling that if they put me under, I'm not coming back." His computer files were wiped post-mortem ("virus"). Two years later his publisher Ron Bonds died in a similarly unusual medical event (Clostridium food poisoning).
William "Bill" Cooper Mundane Ex-Navy, author	2001	Author of Behold a Pale Horse (1991); MJ-12, JFK-as-alien-cover-up theories; radio host of Hour of the Time.	Shot dead by Apache County deputies during arrest attempt, Eagar AZ.	Often portrayed as a martyr, but Cooper had just shot Deputy Robert Martinez in the head (Martinez survived). It was an open armed confrontation Cooper himself initiated. Active arrest warrant for aggravated assault. Not a covert hit.
Ron Bonds Suspicious Publisher, IllumiNet Press	2001	Published most Jim Keith titles, JFK conspiracy material, Mothman Prophecies-related books.	Clostridium food poisoning, 15 hours after a meal at "El Azteca", Atlanta. Died at Grady Memorial.	CDC reports ~7 deaths/year out of 250,000 food-poisoning cases. Cryolife (Atlanta tissue bank) was later identified as a source of Clostridium-contaminated cadaver tissue — Minnesota briefly suspended all knee surgeries after three deaths. Both Keith (knee surgery, 1999) and Bonds died of Clostridium-related causes.
John E. Mack Mundane Harvard psychiatrist, Pulitzer Prize	2004	Department head, Harvard Medical Psychiatry. Pulitzer Prize 1977 for T.E. Lawrence biography. Author of Abduction (1994); only Harvard tenured professor ever investigated for UFO research.	Hit by a car on Totteridge Lane, London, after T.E. Lawrence Society symposium in Oxford.	Driver Raymond Czechowski (52) confessed: "careless driving while under the influence of alcohol". The Mack family themselves wrote to the Crown Court asking for leniency, stating the act was neither malicious nor intentional.
Philip Coppens Suspicious Belgian author/journalist	2012	56 episodes of Ancient Aliens (History Channel); editor of Frontier Magazine; CIA-Stargate, Rennes-le-Château research.	Angiosarcoma in Los Angeles — extremely rare cancer (<200 US cases/year).	Diagnosis Dec 13 2012, death Dec 30 2012 — 17 days. Unusually aggressive trajectory even for angiosarcoma. No external evidence of foul play, but the rarity and speed are noted in conspiracy circles.
Roger Leir Mundane Podiatric surgeon, MUFON	2014	Performed ~16 surgical removals of alleged "alien implants"; analyzed by Los Alamos National Labs, NM Tech, U Toronto.	Complications during foot surgery, related to a 2010 auto rollover.	2010 rollover after a MUFON symposium was unexplained. His final article "The Smoking Gun" appeared days before his death. Lab analyses (NM Tech) found "commonly found elements" — the alien interpretation was Leir's, not the data's.
Amy Eskridge Suspicious Co-founder Inst. for Exotic Science	2022	Active research into anti-gravity propulsion, Huntsville AL.	Self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officially: suicide.	Had reported "directed-energy-weapon" attacks with body burns to ex-British-intelligence officer Franc Milburn before her death. Family says she suffered from chronic pain. The technical claims are unverified — but the documentation of pre-death threats is real.
Matthew J. Sullivan Forensic USAF intelligence officer (Bronze Star)	2024	Air Force intelligence officer, Bronze Star recipient. Source for David Grusch's whistleblower complaint to the Intelligence Community Inspector General.	"Accidental overdose" — alprazolam, cyclobenzaprine, imipramine, alcohol. Falls Church, VA, age 39.	Died weeks before scheduled congressional interview. Rep. Eric Burlison demanded an FBI investigation. Currently part of the official 2022–2026 federal investigation cluster.
Frank Maiwald Suspicious JPL Space Research	2024	Jet Propulsion Laboratory researcher.	No public cause of death.	Part of the 2022–2026 cluster currently under FBI investigation. Limited public information.
Monica Reza Suspicious JPL / Aerojet Rocketdyne materials engineer	2025	Materials engineer with overlapping projects to W.N. McCasland.	Disappeared while hiking, Angeles National Forest, June 2025. Body never found.	Active UAP-relevant materials research at time of disappearance. Part of the federal cluster.

William Neil McCasland Suspicious Ex-Cdr, Air Force Research Lab Wright-Patterson	2026	Former commander of the lab historically associated with Roswell debris analysis. Mentioned in 2016 Podesta WikiLeaks emails as a UAP contact.	Vanished without phone, glasses, or wearables, Albuquerque, 27 February 2026.	Wife denied UFO knowledge but confirmed "brief association with the UFO community". The single most significant entry of the active cluster — the highest-ranking former military officer with a Roswell-adjacent biography to vanish in living memory.
Thomas Castello Folklore Alleged Dulce Base whistleblower	—	Allegedly leaked photographs and accounts from the underground "Dulce Base" facility, NM.	"Disappeared" — no documented date or circumstances.	Existence not verified. The Black Vault classifies the case as "Verified Hoax"; the famous "Castello photos" are demonstrably fakes. Likely fabricated within the broader Bennewitz disinformation context.

Methodology note Classification follows four criteria: Forensic anomalies means documented inconsistencies in autopsy, scene, or cause-of-death determination. Suspicious circumstances means timing, threats, or contextual evidence raises questions absent forensic documentation. Mundane explanation means the death has a documented conventional cause despite later mythologization. Folklore means the person's existence or death is not independently verifiable.

The 2022–2026 cluster (Sullivan, Eskridge, McCasland, Reza, Maiwald, Casias, Chavez, Grillmair, Loureiro, and others) is the first cluster of researcher deaths officially under joint White House and FBI investigation, confirmed by the White House Press Secretary in April 2026 and FBI Director Kash Patel.
